How do I build a pedigree?

Pedigrees in Breedpost are automatically generated based on the father and mother fields you set on each individual or breeding. Once those relationships are linked, the pedigree tree builds itself — there’s no need to draw anything manually.

Info

You can build pedigrees either by starting from an individual or from a breeding. The process is the same — the difference is simply where you begin.

Tip
If you start from a breeding, Breedpost automatically joins the father and mother together and generates a combined pedigree on that breeding page. In most cases, the mother’s pedigree is already complete because she’s listed on your site, and sometimes the father’s as well if he’s owned by you. Breedpost reuses that information automatically.

Option 1 — Start from a breeding

  1. Go to the Breedings collection in your dashboard.
  2. Click the ➕ button in the top right-hand corner to create a new breeding.
  3. Fill out the Father and Mother fields.
    • You can select existing individuals or create new ones directly from the breeding.
  4. Click Save.

Once the father and mother are linked, Breedpost automatically builds the combined pedigree for that pairing.

Info
If you also want to show this pedigree on the parents’ individual profiles, go to the Individuals collection and make sure those same father and mother records are linked correctly (see below).

Option 2 — Start from an individual

  1. Go to the Individuals collection in your dashboard.
  2. Click the ➕ button in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Fill out your individual’s details (name, image, etc.).
  4. Under Parents, you’ll see:
    • Father: select an existing father or create a new one.
    • Mother: select an existing mother or create a new one.

  1. Click Save.
    • Once saved, the pedigree for this individual will automatically start forming as you link parents and ancestors.

Step 3 — Build out the pedigree

To expand the pedigree:

  1. Go to the Individuals collection again.
  2. Find the father you selected.
  3. Open that individual and assign his father and mother in the same way.
  4. Repeat this for each parent — continue adding fathers and mothers as far back as you want the pedigree to go.

Each time you add a parent, the pedigree automatically updates across all connected individuals.

Info
To check your progress as you build, add the individual to an Individuals List block on a page (such as your “Our Dogs” or “Our Cats” page). This lets you preview the pedigree on your live site layout and confirm that all parent links are working correctly.

Step 4 — Check publication status

Only published individuals (or those with pedigree visibility turned on) will appear in public pedigrees.

  • Status: set to Published if you want the profile visible on your site.
  • Pedigree Status: This controls whether an individual appears only in pedigrees but not as a standalone profile.

Tip

You can use “Pedigree only” status for ancestors you want included in pedigrees but not listed on your public site.

Step 5 — Choose a pedigree design

You can switch how pedigrees display on profile or breeding pages:

  • Default/Table: Best when you want thumbnails and extra pedigree details in a compact grid.
  • Tree: Clean, line-linked nodes showing name, titles, and coat type — great for simpler, visual pedigrees.

Where to set it:

  • On an Individual page, choose Pedigree Design and select Default or Tree.
  • On a Breeding page, the same Pedigree Design option controls how that breeding’s pedigree appears.

Once your father, mother, and ancestors are linked, Breedpost automatically displays a complete, interactive pedigree on both the individual profiles and breeding pages — no manual charts required.
