Which should I choose? A dark or light website design

Some people prefer light website designs and some prefer dark. But should you select a design for your dog breeder website based on your personal preference?

How about considering your market and your website goals before choosing a dark or light design.

Why publish a website? What are your website goals? For most ethical registered dog breeders I suspect your goals are to

  • inform and educate
  • showcase
  • sell

I don’t like adding sell to that list. It infers making a profit and I know ethical breeding is not about that. Really what I mean is to create and foster a relationship with a potential puppy buyer which may eventually result in a transaction, benefiting all parties especially the dog.

When to choose a light website design

Websites that are text heavy, such as blogs, newspapers and businesses tend to have lighter backgrounds and darker text.

This is because it’s easier to read dark text against a light background on a screen. There is much less eye strain for the user.

Although if reading on screen for long periods of time, some people prefer a darker background with lighter text.

So, if you’re intending to publish lengthy blog articles to inform and educate, I would recommend selecting a lighter design.

When to choose a dark website design

Photos can look better on a dark background. They can really pop! Especially great photos.

Online portfolios, image galleries and creatives often use a dark design. Their goal is to showcase images and their websites may only use minimal text.

So, if you don’t intend publishing long form blog posts, then a dark design may be for you.

Showcasing quality dog photos on a dark design may work really well.

Consider your website goals to help select a dark or light design

Your website is a marketing tool so it is important that it’s usable. Your goal is to engage and communicate with your website visitors.

Choosing an appropriate design that enhances your content is an important decision.
